Research summary
The purpose of this study is to inform patient care by assessing whether certain characteristics (such as trauma, frailty and procedure complexity), modifies the inflammatory response in individuals recovering from surgery. This will enhance our understanding of the relationship between injury, surgery and inflammation, which can aid in developing targeted interventions to improve health outcomes.
The study will include 300 patients having surgery under trauma & orthopaedics, at Nottingham University Hospitals. The study will include adult patients who are having emergency surgery following an injury and those having elective surgery. The study will collect biological samples, hospital data, and require patients to complete a small number of questionnaires and assessments.
The biological samples will include blood samples at up to 3 different timepoints, and a single faecal sample. Clinical data (such as comorbidities, injury details and complications) will be collected from the medical health record. Patients will be asked to complete a questionnaire and non-invasive physical assessment (timed up and go, grip strength), which will take a maximum of 10 minutes to complete.
Biological samples will be analysed using standard immunological, protein, genetic and biochemical assays. The lab results will be analysed in the context of the patients clinical pathway and outcomes to allow us to understand how certain patient and treatment factors influence the inflammatory response to surgery.
