Data collection arrangements
We are storing data that is already collected as part of routine care - to see if we can find patterns or help predict results and target treatments for patients with achalasia. This will include patient's age, gender, ethnicity, symptoms, duration of disease, test results and any treatments and their results. Patient data will not be identifiable and access to the database will be highly restricted.
Research programme
Achalasia and gastroparesis are rare, but increasingly diagnosed, conditions affecting peoples ability to eat normally. They are treated with an endoscopic procedure - called POEM (either O-POEM for the oesophagus or G-POEM for the stomach (gastric)). POEM has been around since 2013, but only a few hospitals in the UK offer it. Nationwide (and across the EU), there will be a wealth of data from which we can learn: more about the diseases, but also more about how and who people will respond to certain treatments so we can pick the best one for them. The collected data in this Registry will be analysed to help us achieve this aim.
