Research summary
Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy and lactation is a rare condition when bones break (fracture) easily. These breaks usually occur in the spine, or occasionally the hip, and happen around the time a woman is giving birth. The fractures can cause pain and disability. This condition may often be undiagnosed as many healthcare professionals think that back pain (a common symptom with spine breaks) is a consequence of the pregnancy or giving birth. This can be a frightening and confusing time for the women affected, and also for their partners and families.
In this study participants will be asked to complete a detailed questionnaire which will collect the information about clinical characteristics of these patients and physical and mental health impact of the condition. In the second part of the study focus group interviews will be held with women affected by pregnancy and lactation associated osteoporosis and their partners. These will help us identify common themes and experiences that these women have been through, and the impact on their quality of life and their interactions with families and children. The results from this project will aid earlier detection of the condition, and will ensure appropriate support and management is available to women and their families.REC name
