Research summary
This is a feasibility, pilot study to evaluate platelet function in patients with retinal vein occlusion and compare this with age- and sex-matched controls. The primary outcome measure for this study will be platelet function. The study aims to recruit 60 participants: 20 with retinal vein occlusion who have not received vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) blocking agents, 20 with retinal vein occlusion currently receiving anti-VEGF agents, and 20 participants without retinal vein occlusion.
Participants will be required to give a single blood test during a routine clinical visit at The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Eye Clinic. Samples will be taken in the NHS Trust and sent securely to the University of Reading for analysis. Each participant will receive a study ID to remove identifiable data and maintain confidentiality. Anonymised medical health information will be accessed by study staff only including demographics and medical history. This will be shared between the NHS Trust research staff and the University research staff through this study ID. Any information will be password protected with passwords sent in a separate email.
The results of this study will be submitted for publication in a scientific journal. Participants wishing to receive a copy of the published article will be provided with this.
