Data collection arrangements
Samples collected will be stored as a biobank of plasma, serum and DNA.
Data will have personal identifiers, medical history, treatment information, and family history. Samples collected will be from suitable patients identified from outpatient clinics, by the research team following collection of signed consent forms. Consent forms will be kept in a restricted area in an office/laboratory which is only accessible via a keycard, and is monitored by CCTV 24/7hrs.
Samples will be processed and stored at the correct temperatures in locked freezers to form the biobank, in the Department of Thrombosis and Vascular Biology within the Rayne Institute which is a restricted area and only accessible via a keycard, and is monitored by CCTV 24/7hrs.
Research programme
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is defined as the association of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) with arterial or venous thrombosis or pregnancy morbidity. These antibodies are heterogeneous in their targets and conventionally are detected by the presence of either anticardiolipin (aCL) antibody and/or lupus anticoagulant (LA). There is limited understanding of how these antibodies cause disease. Blood from patients with APS will be collected for storage as a biobank of plasma, serum and DNA, so that studies can be conducted to understand the pathogenesis of the disease. Patients will be recruited as they attend the Haematology, Thrombosis and Haemostasis and Lupus Unit clinics. Research undertaken will involve trying to further understand pathogenic mechanisms of the disease in addition to identifying potential biomarkers.
