Research summary
Plantar fasciitis is a common and sometimes debilitating condition that accounts for ~80% of heel pain and is commonly seen in primary care. Whilst generally considered an ‘overuse injury’, the natural history, causes and risk factors for plantar fasciitis remain poorly understood.
The spring ligament is located on the underside of the foot and connects the heel bone to the navicular, which is a bone in the mid-foot. This ligament is an important static stabilizer of the foot and is crucial to its biomechanics.
The aim of this study is to identify whether there is an association between spring ligament failure and plantar fasciitis. In doing this, we hope to identify a risk factor in the development of plantar faciitis and further our understanding of the natural history of this condition.
