  • Research summary

The PIVOTP Study forms a part of theme 3 of the DISCOVERY programme and will address a key question in cancer diagnostics: at what level of risk does a susceptible black Man believe rapid investigation for possible prostate cancer is warranted? We have studied the allied question for colorectal, lung and pancreatic cancers, in a mixed population, but plan to address a specifically black population (and a common black cancer) in this extension. It will also inform the wider programme aim of developing diagnostic pathways for cancer. The study is an electronic survey using vignettes or hypothetical scenarios to elicit the views of people attending their GP practices. The main objectives are:

    * To establish whether susceptible black men (of African or Caribbean origin) would choose to be tested for prostate cancer at different levels of risk compared to non-blacks.
*To describe the level of sureness attached to responses about whether to be tested.

This is a survey using an electronic questionnaire that will take place in GP practice waiting rooms. Consenting patients will complete the questionnaire on a tablet computer (smaller than a conventional laptop, with touch screen 8“ x 6“) while they are waiting to see their GP. Patients will be asked to respond to a vignette in which they will be presented with hypothetical set of symptoms. They will be told how likely the symptoms are to signify a possible prostate cancer and the testing procedure that may be required. The patient will then be asked to choose whether or not they would like to be tested now, or to defer testing. Follow-up questions will be used to establish sureness of response. (in the earlier PIVOT study of three cancers, we also requested willingness to pay data: this is not planned in PIVOTP)
