  • Research summary

This is a qualitative study of people living with Type 1 Diabetes(T1D) including those with difficult to manage and,or, poorly controlled diabetes. We will explore their met and unmet needs of past and current treatments for T1D and ascertain their wishes and hopes for the future. We aim to gain a structured insight into how their everyday life living with T1D is and how their history and management shapes their ideas around islet transplantation, using either deceased donor islets or human embryonic stem cells-derived islets, including its benefits and risks.
We aim to interview up to 25 participants. The first visit will be an interview, either in person, using "Near me" video link or telephone. The first section of the interview will last around 2 hours. The participant will then have a 30-minute break and be given short patient information leaflets on islet transplantation to read during this break. On return they may ask any questions they have about the information they have just read. The second section of the interview will then begin. This will be concentrated on their views on islet transplantation and is expected to last 30 minutes- 1 hour. We expect that this visit will take 3-4 hours in total.
The participant will be given the option to split this into two separate interviews.
At the end of the interview the participant will be given a questionnaire pack and asked to complete these at home at a time that is suitable to them, within a week of interview so that the information is fresh in their mind. The questionnaires should take no more than 30-45 mins. They will be given the option to complete these electronically. The participant will also be given a stamped addressed envelope to return their paper questionnaires.
This will be the end of the study.
