Research summary
Patients with chronic kidney disease who are treated by dialysis often suffer with muscle and joint pains, and are at increased risk of protein energy wasting a form of malnutrition characterised by muscle wasting. Exercise programs have been reported to improve physical fitness in dialysis patients. Many patients sit in a specially designed chair when they have their dialysis treatment. By attaching a pedal set to the foot of the chair, patients are able to “cycle” whilst having their dialysis treatment.
We wish to undertake a pilot study to determine whether introducing an exercise program for patients when they attend for dialysis improves patient self-reported wellbeing, muscle strength, and muscle mass.REC name
