Research summary
We propose running a pilot study of a new technique that might be used to reduced tremor in patients with Parkinson's disease and other tremor disorders. We propose delivering a range of mild, non-painful, stimuli of different sorts, and recording the effect they might have on the tremor. We will ask for feedback about the process from subjects, in order to help assess whether the new technique is likely to be worth pursuing as a formal treatment trial.
The current study will only provide pilot data on patient preference and some idea of what the most effective type of stimulus might be. We shall use the data generated to consider designing a future trial of efficacy (this trial is not part of this ethics application).
We plan to assess this novel technique on up to 15 patients with Parkinson's disease or dystonic tremors who give their informed consent. The testing will take approximately one hour on a single visit. There are no anticipated safety issues since all the individual components of the system are commercially available and already used clinically in different ways.REC name
