  • Research summary

The aim of this pilot study is to investigate the effects of Kinesio Tape (K-Tape) on specific outcome measures in the management of Anterior Knee Pain (AKP). \n\nAKP is defined as pain in the front part of the knee and is commonly treated by physiotherapists. Once assessed and diagnosed, management of AKP is a combination of rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, biomechanical corrections, manual therapy, taping and exercises. \n\nK-Tape is a relatively new, innovative approach of treating and managing musculoskeletal conditions. Although taping techniques are used in clinical practice, there is limited scientific evidence evaluating the effectiveness of K-Tape. \n\nThis pilot study aims to investigate the effects of the use of K-Tape in the management of AKP compared to current standard treatment. A literature review demonstrated a lack of good quality research into the use of K-Tape and its effect on the management of AKP. This supports the proposed research project.\n\nPatients will be selected from the Nottinghamshire Community Physiotherapy Service. This study will consist of two groups of patients randomly assigned. Group one (control) patients will be treated with current standard treatment techniques with a placebo K-Taping technique. Group two (intervention) patients will be treated with standard treatment techniques with the addition of a set K-Taping technique. Two outcome measures will be used to assess the effects. \n\nIt is proposed that this pilot study will allow for several factors to be addressed, assessing the feasibility of developing the research.
