  • Research summary

In children today there is concern about low levels of physical activity, exposure to prolonged sitting while watching television or playing computer games, and rising levels of obesity.

There is very limited data about physical activity, sitting and sleep in children with common chronic diseases. In the proposed study, we plan to measure all movement components from physical activity, through to sleeping in children with common chronic childhood illnesses and investigate whether there is a difference in children with chronic illnesses when compared with healthy children of similar age and sex.

We plan a case-control observational study, in which we will measure each component of the movement continuum (physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep) over 24-hrs for 5-7 days in children with common chronic illnesses using a small lightweight monitor (activPALTM) is placed on a child’s mid-thigh secured with an adhesive dressing. ActivPALTM is a small (5.3cm x 3.5cm x 0.7cm) lightweight (15g) accelerometer and inclinometer that is ideal for measuring PA and postural changes.

We plan to ask children with congenital heart disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus and juvenile idiopathic rheumatoid arthritis and their parents who attend clinics at Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow, U.K.) to take part. We also plan to recruit healthy children and their parents to participate as comparative controls. In total, we are aiming to study up to 160 children in total (80 pairs).

After obtaining consent, the researcher will attach the monitor to the child who will be asked to wear this monitor all the time for 5-7 days with the only exception being bathing or swimming when the monitor has to be removed because it is not waterproof.

After 7 days, we will collect the monitor and downloaded and analyse the data to give objective measures of time spent in physical activity, sitting and sleeping.
