  • Research summary

Positron emission tomography imaging provides metabolic data of the whole body as well as anatomical images. The PETIC centre (Wales Research and Clinical Positron Emission Tomography Centre) provides a clinical PET/CT service for the whole of South and Mid Wales. At the centre we image approximately 1900 patients per year, mainly for Oncology (cancer) indications. The PET/CT scan is a rich source of data as regards the metabolic function of all body systems; not just the system for which the patient is undergoing imaging.

We are seeking permission to ask for informed written consent from patients attending for clinical PET/CT scans, to use their scan data for the purposes of research. We also propose to seek their permission to access patients medical records, including electronic records. We will be asking for patients permission to access records from any NHS hospital in Wales and to be looking at all body systems, not just those for which they were referred fro the scan. We aim to undertake pilot studies to examine the relationship between PET tracer uptake in various body systems with the presence of previous and subsequent disease within those systems.

An example of a pilot study will be to evaluate FDG uptake in arteries and to see whether or not this correlates with the presence of previous or subsequent cardiovascular events.
