Research summary
Humans are highly skilled at recognizing other people from even fleeting glimpses
of their faces, bodies and movements. The extent to which these different social
perception skills are related to each other, however, remains an open question.
One particularly powerful way to investigate the relationship between them is to
compare how these skills change during development. Another is to look at
multiple social perception skills in a disorder that is characterized by difficulties
with social understanding. Here, we propose to do both – looking at face, body
and human movement recognition skills across two ages in childhood in both
typically developing children and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
As a consequence, this project is expected to reveal key information about the
relationship between social perception skills that will inform our understanding of
the cognitive architecture of social perception as well as how social perception
skills are related to social understanding during both typical and atypical
development.REC name
