Research summary
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition that causes most heart attacks. Many people have an increased risk of suffering from a heart attack and this is influenced by things like our genetic make-up, our lifestyle choices and our environment. It has recently been suggested that inflammation (swelling of tissue because of an infection) may also be responsible for causing heart attacks. Inflammation may be caused by a common condition such as gum disease. With this study we would like to compare the dental health of patients that have had a heart attack to the dental health of healthy people to see whether poor dental health can lead to heart attacks.
