Research summary
This study has been set up by St. George’s, University of London in collaboration with Public Health England, in alignment with the World Health Organisation and HRP-Alliance COVID-19 in pregnancy generic cohort protocol, in order to answer important questions about the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women and their infants, including the impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy outcomes, potential routes of vertical transmission and the potential for protective immunity via placental antibody transfer. By collecting samples from a large cohort of pregnant women during pregnancy and at delivery, and from the newborn infants of women who had COVID-19 infection during pregnancy, we hope to better understand the risk and mode of mother to child transmission of COVID-19 in order to develop an evidence base for recommendations, guidance and policy decisions for the clinical and public health management of pregnant women, their infants and the healthcare staff that care for them.
