Research summary
Over 50,000 patients with arthritis of the knee undergo Knee Arthroplasty (replacement) each year in the UK. The majority of these patients undergo total knee arthroplasty, where the whole knee joint is replaced. The most common complaint with this procedure is post operative pain, which can not only lead to discomfort but also reduced post-operative rehabilitation and mobility. This study aims to determine if a ??peri-articular knee injection?? aids pain relief in patients undergoing an elective total knee replacement. We are comparing two treatments ?? usual pain relief with a nerve block versus usual pain relief with a peri-articular injection. The new type of pain relief involves ??peri-articular injection?? which is an injection of local anaesthetic and painkillers into the tissues around the new joint. The injection is done during the operation before the skin is closed. None of the drugs used are experimental drugs and are used routinely at these concentrations for pain relief. The usual pain relief will consist of tablet pain killers. We will also measure the level of local anaesthetic in the blood and the knee drain after the operation.
