Research summary
In the current COVID-19 pandemic, research is needed for better understanding risk factors and mechanisms. Whilst COVID-19 has a viral origin, it is suspected that in severe forms of the infection, bacteria play a part, increasing the chance of complications. Many patients with Covid19 infection develop blood clotting and vascular complications.
Stroke is the second common cause of death worldwide and the third most common cause of disability. Gum disease (periodontitis) is an even more common disease causing tooth loss and pain.
Gum disease and stroke are closely link with data suggesting that a patient suffering from gum problems will have a double chance to develop a stroke during their life. We designed an observational study to recruit consecutive stroke patients (minimum of 300) to detect whether they have Covid19 and collect a saliva/oral sample to assess their risk of oral infections.
At a follow-up routine visit, participants will also be asked to have a detailed oral/dental exam (including gum disease assessment, dryness, chewing, speaking and swallowing non-invasive tests).
Access to the routine medical records/assessments and imaging will allow us to monitor over a follow-up of at least 24 months all participants. Our aim is ultimately to identify any strong links between Covid19 infection, oral diseases and bacteria with stroke presentation and its complications.
