  • Research summary

This study will seek to evaluate how Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) roles are utilised and understood within the context of emergency surgical assessment clinical areas. Advanced nursing roles are used commonly across all healthcare settings but have been more recently introduced into surgical departments within hospitals. This means that there is currently very little research into these roles that is specific to emergency surgical assessment areas and little is therefore known about how ANPs work within them, or how their role impacts the service they provide, their colleagues and the patients they care for.

This study will involve ANPs, their colleagues (referred to as 'stakeholders') and patients across two acute NHS Trusts.

Phase One will involve interviewing ANPs and their colleagues (stakeholders). Phase Two of the study will involve interviewing patients that have been cared by ANPs. All participants will be asked questions about the ANP role, what it involves and how it impacts or impacted upon them as an individual. As data is collected, any emerging patterns or key issues that arise will be used to inform the basis for subsequent interviews. Interviews will be held online using video conferencing software, or over the telephone. These phases are expected to last no more than 6 months, with an estimated 15 interviews in total from each research site. Patient identifiable data will not be recorded and all data will be anonymised.

Phase Three will run concurrently to the first and second phase and will involve the collection of documentary data such as job descriptions and minutes from meetings that discuss ANP-delivered services or elements of the ANP role.

Data obtained from both sites will be assessed for common themes, similarities and differences. This study is funded by the Royal College of Nursing Strategic Research Alliance with University of Sheffield.
