Research summary
The views of forensic in-patients have rarely been looked at in research. Of the published studies available, none have looked specifically at security aspects of medium secure units and how patients perceive these. This research will also look at the relationship between this and how patients view their treatment outcomes. There are numerous therapy vs. security debates but no scientific research has been compiled. It is an important area within forensics and it is important that service users are able to communicate their feelings with regards to their care setting.
This study will be carried out in NHS medium secure units throughout England, involving males under the Mental Health Act aged 18 or over. A validated questionnaire will be used, where patients will, after information and consent is given, complete with a MSc student, lasting aprox. 20 to 35 minutes
