  • Research summary

Chronic venous disease (CVD) is the product of sustained insult to the venous valvular system resulting in valvular incompetence which manifests as varicose veins, telangiectasia and reticular veins commonly in the lower limbs. Chronic incompetence of valves creates a persistent venous hypertension that leads to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This creates a wide spectrum of more severe symptoms including pain, oedema, pigmentation and eventually ulceration. Studies have demonstrated that individuals with higher body mass index (BMI) were more likely to have symptomatic venous disease (even without the presence of valvular failure) and worse treatment outcomes and associated risks when compared to a patient with normal BMI. This study aims to explore the patient perspective of their own venous disease on a background of obesity. This will be conducted through the use of questionnaires to gather data.
