Research summary
Over the past half a century conflict encounters involving Violence and Aggression (V&A) directed towards Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Staff have increased significantly. Studies have shown that up to 90% of EMS staff have reported being subjected to physical violence during their duties, 17% have been threatened with a weapon.
Aims and objectives
The overall aim of this project will be to explore protecting EMS Staff from aggression and violence in conflict encounters
The objectives will be to:
• Explore general views on V&A directed towards EMS staff
• Explore views on characteristics associated with V&A such as intoxication, drugs, altered mental status and the role of medical illnesses and mental health problems.
• Explore the impact of policy changes such as The Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018 and #WithUsNotAgainst Us campaign in order to gauge the attitudes, understandings and impact of these initiatives in the public
This study involves two work packages: PEACE 1 will involve a survey of the public and in PEACE 2 we will interview EMS staff and construct a grounded theory exploring this issue from their perspective.REC name
