Research summary
At the moment several rating scales such as UPDRS, NMSS, UDysRS, mAIMS, MoCa are needed to access the global severity of the disease. All of them are very useful but they explore different aspects of the disease, are time consuming and do not provide a holistic assessment of the motor (tremor, stiffness, slowness) or non --motor (anxiety, depression, pain, sleep etc) aspects of the condition in addition to drug induced complications. The MDS-UPDRS which is the most complete rating scale is quite long (over 30 pages) is used only in specialised sites.
The Hoehn & Yahr scale does not reflect the non motor complexity of the disease and the outcomes of the various rating scales.
The aim of the Parkinson's Disease Composite Scale (PDCS) project is to create a simple scale able to measure the disease severity taking into account cardinal motor,non-motor and treatment complication symptoms.
The PDCS must take into account quality of life and also the relevance of particular symptoms from the healthcare systems (HCS) point of view (i.e:tremor can be important for the PwP but less important for HCS. On the contrary, falling is very important because it has a great impact for HCS).
The PDCS will include the most important motor, non-motor and treatment complication symptoms.REC name
