Research summary
The pattern of cough in participants with chronic cough over a period of more than one day is not known. This is an observational home-based study that will determine the feasibility of using a smartwatch application-based cough monitor to cough and to measure the daily pattern of cough in patients with refractory chronic cough attending a specialist cough clinic. 24 participants with refractory chronic cough attending the Chronic Cough clinic (12 from each of the 2 sites) will be studied in the Clinical Research Centre, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital, London and Clinical Research Centre at Belfast City Hospital. Participants will be studied over a 4-week period with 2 visits to the Research Centre. The participants will be contacted twice during the month to answer any questions and make sure that the participant is using the smartwatch and that the smart watch is working properly. Individualised baseline cough models (negative binomial models) will be established using the average and standard deviation of each participant's coughs per time period (e.g., hours, days). Cough rates will yield separate models that will be compared to baseline day to quantify and assess variability using statistical approaches to change point detection.
