Research summary
The use of dental masks and visors are universal in clinical practice, providing the clinician protection from airborne aerosols produced by operative dental treatment. However, the image of the dentist wearing a mask and approaching the patient is an image often associated with dental fear, possibly made worse by reducing non-verbal communication between the dentist and the patient. It is envisioned that the study will investigate whether patients have a preference to what type of safety equipment they would prefer their dentist to wear and whether this is linked to the level of dental anxiety they normally exhibit.
