  • Research summary

There is intensive use of healthcare resources to treat venous leg ulcers (VLU) which often take months or years to heal, they also frequently recur causing prolonged distress and suffering for patients. The focus of healthcare provision in the United Kingdom is shifting towards supporting patients to undertake self-care strategies to improve patient outcomes. A community survey in Belgium suggested that the potential role of community nurses as health educators to provide lifestyle advice to patients with VLU is not being achieved. The findings of the study prompted thoughts to consider whether nurses who provide care to patients with VLU in community clinics in England are effective health educators in how they relay information to patients within a different healthcare system. This qualitative study will explore patient’s experiences of how they receive information and education to support their understanding and promote self-care of their Venous Leg Ulcer (VLU). The study will aim to identify common themes from narratives expressed by patients with a VLU of how the nurses in community clinics offer explanations of venous disease, VLU assessments, treatment and self-care information. A purposive sample ( an identified group ) of 6-10 patients with a VLU who are attending community clinics will be interviewed to gather their experiences and explore answers to the research question. Study duration will be 6 months.
