Research summary
This study aims to find out what patients’ experiences of attending follow up appointments after having completed a pain management programme (PMP) are. The key research questions are; are follow up appointments helpful or unhelpful? Do follow up appointment(s) help patients to stay on track with their goals? Could follow up appointments be improved in anyway, and if so, how?
It is important to conduct this piece of research because although follow up appointments are commonly offered to patients that have completed a PMP, it is not clear from the existing literature, whether follow up appointments are of value to patients.
Individuals will be invited to take part in this study if they have completed a PMP group at the Manchester and Salford Pain Center within the last 6-12 months. In addition, they must have attended at least one PMP follow up session, which are offered one month, three months and six months after the PMP has finished. Up to 10 participants will take part in this study.
Participants will be asked to take part in one face-face interview, during which participants will be asked questions about their experiences of PMP follow up appointment(s). The interview will take approximately one hour to complete. The interview will take place either on the Salford Royal Foundation Trust hospital site or within the participants’ home.
Findings from this study may be used to develop and improve the PMP follow up appointments. Therefore, this research may benefit patients attending future PMPs.
This study is being conducted by a Trainee Clinical Psychologist as part of an academic requirement of the Lancaster University Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. This project is sponsored by Lancaster University. The Manchester and Salford Pain Center have been/will be involved in the design and recruitment stages of this study.
