Research summary
Recently there has been an increase in the use of lingual orthodontics where the brackets and wire are fixed to the rear surface of the teeth and thus the intervention is essentially invisible under normal social circumstances. From informal discussions with patients and clinicians it would appear that while patients have similar expectations of the outcome of their lingual orthodontic treatment in comparison to the traditional approach, they have different expectations regarding the treatment process (expecting their to be less social impact but greater physical discomfort since the brackets are close to the tongue and experienced as uncomfortable). The aim of this study is to explore the expectations of patients seeking lingual orthodontic treatment, in order to explore the similarities and differences in comparison to the traditional approach with a view to then modifying or complementing the existing measure.
