Research summary
Despite the increasing evidence-base supporting the efficacy of eTherapies for mental health problems and co-morbid difficulties, there remain some challenges in understanding the added value of these innovations within standard mental health service provision, particularly around implementation issues and affect patient satisfaction. This research therefore investigates the added benefit of providing a novel eTherapy treatment service, Self Help Services in Manchester, which delivers a range of eTherapies for mental health and common co-morbid difficulties, including substance misuse and insomnia. This study will therefore utilise service user satisfaction assessment data already collected by Self-Help Services from their service users, as part of their standard approach to monitoring and evaluation. A brief questionnaire will be administered to 200 participants alongside standard satisfaction assessments. Service users who consent to participate in the study, have completed an eTherapy programme at Self Help Services and who are above age 18 will be eligible to take part in the study. Semi-structured qualitative interviews will then be conducted with a sample of approximately 20 of these participants (as this should be a large enough sample for data saturation to be reached), these will last for no longer than 30 minutes. Interviews will explore general patient satisfaction of eTherapies and of their experiences with the programme, and more specifically whether they think the programme has helped to improve their mental health and quality of life, and psychosocial functioning more widely. Completion of the questionnaires and interviews will take place in Self Help Services. The questionnaire with standard assessments (Assessment Patient Experience Questionnaire and Treatment Experience Questionnaire) will be analysed for frequency data. Thematic analysis will be conducted on the interviews to explore the general themes around patient satisfaction.
