  • Research summary

    Primary objective
Investigate the feasibility of collecting intermediate and longer-term patient-reported outcome measures in patients with major trauma.

    Secondary objective
Understand patient experiences of recovery and rehabilitation following major trauma
Setting - Single major trauma centre with a dedicated rehabilitation service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne.

    Method
We aim to recruit 120 patients over a three month period. We will collect patient reported outcome measures suitable for trauma patients at four timepoints: baseline (i.e. during hospital admission), three months, six months and 12 months post-injury. Drop-out rates will be recorded at each time point.
Routinely-collected patient characteristics (e.g. age, sex, mechanism of injury, injury severity score and most injured body region) will be collected to further understand changes to long-term patient reported data and drop-out.
A sub-sample of up to 20 patients will be recruited into a nested qualitative study. We will undertake semi-structured interviews at similar timepoints to explore patient acceptability of collecting the longer-term outcome measures and patient experiences of recovery and existing major trauma rehabilitation care.

    Impact
The findings will inform practice and policy-making on patient generated information to inform rehabilitation priorities and facilitate cost-effective trauma delivery and resource utilisation post-injury. The findings will also inform the methods and focus of a larger future grant application in relation to rehabilitation following major trauma that will examine complex cross-boundary working, with a strong patient and public involvement focus and input from regional/national/international collaborators from our project oversight group.
