Research summary
We analysed patient reported outcome measures (Oxford Knee score) preoperatively and at one year follow up in 100 consecutive patient specific instrumentation (PSI) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in an unselected group of patients. The PSI technique is a new computer based total knee replacement where a MRI scan of the knee is obtained before surgery. From this scan, images are created on which planning is done using a computer software with default settings. The plan is reviewed by the surgeon who makes necessary changes. We are studying the changes done preoperatively and their benefits. This technique has potential to improve alignment of the knee, which we compared with computer navigation in 8 cases intra-operatively. The operating time and also blood loss are reduced as there is no violation of the intramedullary canal of femur. We are also analysing the blood transfusion rate as a secondary outcome.
