Research summary
In recent years, ‘recovery’ has become a central concept within the drug and alcohol field and there has been a significant move towards ‘recovery-oriented’ drug treatment nationally and internationally. The extent to which the definitions and measures of recovery currently being used within the addictions reflect the goals and aspirations of drug users themselves has, however, received remarkably little attention. This is in contrast to other areas of medicine, where patients’ views of their own health status are often considered essential for improving the quality and cost effectiveness of health care. This study seeks to counter the lack of attention to service users’ views and experiences of recovery by producing a new patient reported outcome measure of addiction recovery (PROM-AR). To this end, the research team will use an innovative participatory methodology (c.f. Trivedi and Wykes, 2002; Rose et al., 2011; Evans et al., 2012) and endeavour to build capacity for future collaborative addictions research involving clinicians, service users and carers. The study will take 21 months to complete and is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Participants will be recruited through a range of residential and community drug treatment settings as well as community-based self-help groups in South London.
