Research summary
Increasing Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) services operate a stepped care system in which most patients are initially allocated to a low intensity intervention and, if they do not make sufficient progress, are later stepped up to a high intensity treatment. There are high early drop-out rates from low intensity treatment and early drop-out is associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Little is known about patient reasons for early drop out from treatment. The aim of the project is to investigate patient reasons, through both quantitative and qualitative methods. The researchers will contact patients who have dropped out early asking that they complete a questionnaire about reasons for dropping out and will interview a sample analysing the interviews through standard qualitative thematic analysis methods.
