  • Research summary

This research study is being undertaken to explore experiences of patients in hospital when being cared for by health care students with a uniform embroidered with their first name and the #hellomyname is… logo, which was implemented in September 2021 for all health care students at Northumbria University. The #hellomynameis… campaign was introduced in 2013 by a patient Kate Granger who was in hospital and she noticed that many of the staff were not introducing themselves before delivering care. This campaign was introduced to improve communication, encouraging more than a friendly introduction but an important driver in the delivery of person centred and compassionate care throughout a patient’s stay in hospital. Our idea to introduce embroidered uniforms complete with the logo and the student name, was to further support this valuable campaign. Student evaluations have been positive in terms of sense of belonging on their placement, improving patient safety and promotion of compassion. As patients are at the heart of this whole campaign we want to now sought their views of being cared for by these health care students whilst in one hospital Trust, using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
