Research summary
Over 6,500 revision knee replacement procedures are performed in the UK each year. Around three-quarters of these revision procedures are undertaken for elective reasons, such as instability, progressive osteoarthritis, stiffness, or unexplained pain. Revision knee surgery is very expensive, complex, and can carry a high risk of complications. Improvements in pain and function following revision knee surgery vary widely between individuals and are often less than those reported after primary knee replacement.
Our understanding of how we can best support people undergoing elective revision knee replacement procedures is very limited.
The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of patients’ experiences of elective knee revision surgery. We will conduct qualitative interviews with patients who have undergone revision surgery for a problematic knee joint replacement within the past 12 months. These interviews will take place in-person, via videoconference [using Microsoft Teams] or over the telephone. Interviews will be audio-recorded and will be analysed using established qualitative methods.
This study will benefit patients in the future by increasing understanding of the experience of undergoing revision joint surgery, and the decision process patients undergo when deciding whether to have revision surgery.REC name
