Research summary
The primary care Out-of Hours service is a challenging clinical environment, where patients with acute illness are assessed by unfamiliar doctors who have access to little or no background information. One approach to improving the ability of OOH clinicians to decide on the most appropriate course of management and the need for admission is to allow them access to point of care (POC) blood tests which give results within minutes when assessing patients at home. These tests are now being introduced into the Oxfordshire OOH service home visiting teams. The aim of this study is to explore the patient and carer experience of receiving a POC blood test at home.
Patients and carers who receive a home visit from a clinician who performs a point of care blood test will be asked for their consent to pass their contact details on to a qualitative researcher. Consenting patients or carers will be contacted and given more information about the study, and if they are happy to proceed with an interview, this will be scheduled. We will aim to interview up to 25 patients or carers.
We will use the interviews to describe the different patient and carer perspectives on point of care blood testing at home by the OOH service.
