  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to better understand the expectations, experiences, and satisfaction of patients that receive physiotherapy for short and medium term conditions. It is important to understand this area better to ensure that services and treatments are delivered in a way that meets what patients need and want.

The study will cover people with musculoskeletal conditions (e.g., back pain, frozen shoulder, sprained ankles) that are expected to improve or resolve with treatment over a defined timescale (several weeks to several months) but are not expected to become lifelong conditions. The focus of the study will be patients who have received physiotherapy (any type of treatment) as part of their overall treatment.

The study will be conducted within South Tyneside Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust across the sites it delivers physiotherapy from. This includes both hospital sites and primary care centres.

The study in is three phases. The first phase involves a review and analysis of literature already published in similar clinical areas. The second phase involves telephone interviews with around 25 participants to find out more information about their experiences. The third phase involves the completion of a questionnaire which will be developed to find out about patients experiences. The overall study is part of a Ph.D. lasting 5 years, but participants will only be involved in one of the phases lasting a few weeks to a few months.
