  • Research summary

Qualitative study of adults discharged from hospital following treatment for community acquired pneumonia (CAP).\n\nBackground: Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an infection of the lungs. It is a serious illness that can affect people of any age. Approximately 22-42% of people who develop pneumonia require admission to hospital. Following adequate initial treatment for pneumonia, a range of symptoms are often still present at 30 days. Full recovery to pre-pneumonia levels of fitness and general health can take over 3 months. Despite the evidently high burden of care that occurs during recovery from CAP, hardly any research has been conducted in this area.\n\nStudy Design: This study aims to capture a detailed account of patient insight, knowledge and experience of the pneumonia recovery journey. This will be achieved by interviewing patients on three separate occasions following discharge from hospital. The audio-recorded interviews will be transcribed and analysed for common themes that highlight the pneumonia recovery journey. As part of each interview, a CAP symptom severity score will be completed. This is a short, validated clinical score based on an eight part questionnaire examining the symptoms of breathlessness, cough, sputum and general well-being. The CAP symptom severity scores will inform the evaluation of patient responses from the interviews.\n\nIn order to understand the attitude of clinicians towards recovery from pneumonia, healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care who regularly care for patients with pneumonia will be interviewed (single interview per clinician). \n\n\n
