Research summary
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), also known as “triple-A”, occurs when a major blood vessel, the aorta that supplies blood to the abdomen, legs and pelvis becomes enlarged or balloons outward exceeding the normal diameter by more than 50%.This research aims to understand the experience of patients with an AAA facing, undergoing, and recovering from lifesaving elective surgery when both the condition and the elective intervention have high mortality rates and to develop recommendations that aim to improve these experiences for patients. A sample of between 8-12 participants who have undergone elective surgery for AAA will be recruited via Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS trust, specifically, the Vascular Team at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). Participants will take part in a semi structured interview which will last around 60-90 minutes. The interviews will be analysed using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).
