  • Research summary

Research question - ‘What are acute stroke patients’ and their carers’ experiences of discharge home with the support of a five day per-week Stroke Early Supported Discharge service?’\nThis research is being carried in conjunction with a Stroke Masters qualification. A qualitative methodology will be employed to gather stroke patients’ and their carers’ experiences of returning home from hospital after having an acute stroke. There is little research about carers’ and patients’ experiences of returning home after a stroke and even less when supported by the recently introduced Stroke Early Supported Discharge Teams that occur with a wide range of service models. This research will help to identify what the patient and carer needs are which will assist commissioning appropriate service models in the future. \nThis research will entail interviewing up to eight acute stroke patients and their primary carers discharged home from the James Paget Hospital with the support of the Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. Maximum variation sampling will be used to ensure broad coverage within a small sample, including factors shown to be important variables, such as age, gender and stroke severity. \nTwo semi-structured interviews will be carried out with patients and / or their carers up to 3 weeks post acute hospital discharge and within 2 weeks post Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team discharge. The two 45-60 minute interviews will be conducted over a period of three to eighteen weeks depending on the rehabilitation period of the patient.\nAll interviews will be transcribed in full and analysed using qualitative content analysis.\nAll patients and carers who are able to provide informed consent and who are not receiving therapy from the researcher will be considered for this study. The study will be conducted over the period of one year.
