Research summary
The research question being addressed is “What is the stroke survivor and carer experience of post-stroke motor apraxia?” Apraxia is a cognitive disorder of purposeful movement which can occur following a stroke. Apraxia can impact activities of daily living, mood and quality of life.
There is limited literature related to the experience of apraxia from the perspective of the patients and carers. This study aims to explore this perspective to help guide future rehabilitation practice.
Stroke survivors and carers who have been clinically identified as having (or having had) post-stroke motor apraxia will be eligible for participation. Carers of stroke survivor participants will also be eligible. Stroke survivor participants will be recruited through two strands; 1) targeted nominations from clinicians at NHS sites across Greater Manchester, and 2) self-referral through charity/community groups (in which case apraxia will be confirmed through clinicians retrospectively). Carers will be recruited through stroke survivor participants.
The study will involve one individual semi-structured interview which will be held in the participants’ homes or within community setting if preferred. All interviews will be audio recorded, some interviews will be video recorded (where communication difficulties warrant non-audio data collection, and where consent is given to do so).REC name
