  • Research summary

‘Patient activation’ describes how engaged and confident a person is in managing their own health. We want to investigate the level of patient activation in patients with vascular disease. Vascular diseases are problems relating to the flow of blood in the body.
We want to know if patients who are more ‘activated’ and engaged in their own health have better health outcomes (do better) after lower limb revascularisation (a procedure to help improve blood flow to the legs) than those who are less engaged.

We will ask participants to complete a survey before their procedure. This will assess their knowledge, skills and confidence required to manage their own health. The survey will score their level of activation. We will then link their level of activation to their health outcomes after their procedure to see if they are related.

More activated patients are more likely to engage in healthy behaviours such as healthy eating and exercise. Higher activation is also linked to a lower risk of having to go to hospital, lower healthcare costs, and a better experience of care.
Therefore, if patient activation is linked to how well a patient does after a procedure, we could personalise the support we give to patients. This would mean the right support is offered to the right patients at the right time. This will help patients to be a part of managing their own condition. This also has the potential to save money for the NHS.

The study will take place at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London. It will be conducted between 01-October-2023 and 01-March-2024. We are asking patients over 18 years old who have planned vascular surgery to participate. There is no formal funding for the study.
