Research summary
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has been observed in 25-33% of the European population and it is the commonest cause of liver disease in this population. Furthermore, with an increasing number of people with Chronic Liver Disease and high levels of obesity in Scotland, NAFLD presents a major healthcare burden. We aim to take a single blood sample from patients attending the Tayside NAFLD clinic to measure markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. The patients involvement ends after the blood sample is given. We will collect fully anonymised (NOT linked anonymised) clinical data, demographic and biometric data from the patients clinical notes. The aim is to investigate if there is evidence of liver inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with NAFLD and if they correlate with severity of disease. This will help us understand how to target treatments for NAFLD in the future
