  • Research summary

The project involves using the Trusts cohort of patients who have undergone knee replacements in the past 5 years. All such patients have, as part of their routine clinical course, x-rays of their knees from before the procedure, at their immediate post op follow up (usually 6 weeks), and also one year after, and some up to 5 years after. Additionally, on all patients we routinely collect patient related outcome scores regarding their knees both pre-op, and at various stages post-op.

There has been some data published to show that the patellar tendon (connecting the knee cap to shin bone) shortens following knee replacement surgery. We would like to use the data already collected to see if this is the case in our cohort and to see if shortening affects their outcome scores. We would also like to see if any particular patient groups or implants are affected.

Our project would involve taking measurements from previously taken, clinically indicated x rays stored on PACS, and comparing to previously collected, clinically indicated patient related outcome measure scores. We would not need to perform additional investigations on patients, nor would we contact patients directly or ask them to be involved in anything other than their routine post-operative management they are undertaking, and no patients will be identifiable in reporting.

We would like this project to be considered for proportionate review, and as such hope the local R&D can provide an exemption to seeking formal ethics approval from the REC.
