  • Research summary

    Background:
Partners can play a vital role in a childbearing mother's perinatal mental health, as well as have their own perinatal mental health needs. There is, however, currently a lack of understanding about how partners experience Community Perinatal Mental Health Teams (CPMHTs).

    Aim of study:
To conduct one-to-one interviews with partners to explore partners' lived experiences of engaging with CPMHTs in NHS Scotland.

    Potential benefits:
Results from the study are anticipated to inform recommendations that promote and facilitate partner-inclusive care delivered by CPMHTs. Doing so has the potential to maximise treatment benefits for the childbearing mother, partner, and baby.

    Who can take part?
Partners (aged 18 years or older) of mothers who have previously accessed, or are currently accessing, a Community Perinatal Mental Health Team in an NHS Scotland Health Board.

    What is involved?
Partners will be invited to attend a one-to-one interview, lasting around 60-90 minutes. The interview will take place remotely using the Microsoft Teams video conferencing platform. A telephone call can be arranged for those partners who do not have access to video conferencing.

The interview will be audio recorded to enable the researcher to later transcribe the interview. The transcription will not identify the partner or any other person(s) mentioned throughout the interview. All recordings will be destroyed once the transcriptions have been completed. Partners will be given the opportunity to comment on the researcher's interpretation of their experiences to ensure that their personal accounts are accurately reflected.

Partners will also be asked to complete a short Demographic Form to obtain some information about the partner's background (e.g., age group, gender). This will help the researcher identify potential linkages between certain demographic characteristics and experiences of CPMHTs. There will be a 'prefer not to say' option should partners not wish to share certain information about themselves.
