Research summary
Hypospadias is a congenital defect to the penis where the urethral opening is a variable distance down the underside of the penis rather than in the usual position at the tip. This affects 1 in 250 males. Conventional treatment is surgical repair however it is controversial as to whether the smallest defects, where the opening is a few millimetres from the usual position, should be repaired surgically. As up to 34% of boys develop complications that require further surgery. We hypothesise that those with the smallest defects who develop problems after the operation are less satisfied than those with larger defects.
A national outcomes audit for Hypospadias was set up around three years ago and has collected, with parental consent, information about near to 800 patients who have had a Hypospadias repair in the United Kingdom. Parents have consented to use of their mobile phone numbers for follow up patient satisfaction surveys. We wish to send a survey invitation via text message to parents to determine parental satisfaction following surgery using a well validated scoring system.
