Research summary
Through the use of qualitative methods the current study aims to better understand parental experiences of unilateral permanent childhood hearing impairment (PCHI), including the diagnosis, their experiences of daily life and their experiences of audiological management. Currently, in the United Kingdom, there is variation about decisions to aid unilateral PCHI. South Tees NHS Trusts has offered aiding to all suitable unilateral PCHI, since the inception of the Newborn hearing screening programme (NHSP), and so are in a unique position to address parental experience for this cohort of patients.
It is the aim of this research that future audiological management decisions and information-giving to parents of children with a newly diagnosed unilateral PCHI will be evidence-based with the parental experiences and expertise highlighted in this study. The overall aim of the study is to develop a description of unilateral permanent childhood hearing loss, which will be national and internationally recognised.
This will be a qualitative study utilising the semi-structured interview technique to gather rich data and to establish themes for this population group. In order to be eligible, participants must be parents of children with diagnosed unilateral hearing loss, who are under the care of the South Tees NHS Audiology department. The research will be conducted at South Tees NHS Trust Audiology sites. Participant involvement will include one visit for a recorded semi-structure interview lasting ninety minutes. Eligible participants will be contacted directly by the research team.REC name
