Research summary
Sheffield Children’s Hospital has introduced a new protocol whereby Verity CT will be used as the first line investigation for all children with suspected scaphoid fractures. Patients with all other suspected wrist injuries /fractures will continue to receive radiographs as the first line investigation. This is because scaphoid fractures are difficult to diagnose with radiography (due to lack of radiological signs in 30% of cases) and verity CT is a more accurate imaging technique.
We want to measure the effect of this change in practice on how quickly the diagnosis is made, how many times the child and/or family have to return to hospital, the child’s quality of life, patient and family satisfaction and overall cost to the NHS.
This study will take place at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and we predict this study to take roughly around 1 year and 6 months until completion.
