Research summary
Older individuals (55 years and over) constitute a growing population in prison mental health care (Offender Health). As a group, they are more vulnerable to poor health outcomes to those with serious mental disorders of the same age, due to a combination of complex forensic-related care backgrounds, lengthy periods of time spent in prison or psychiatric hospitals, more extensive substance use histories, and crime perpetration or victimisation. To date, little is known about this population's clinical profile. This is a particularly under-served community.
Males who are 55 years and over, residing in Nottinghamshire prisons will be eligible to take part in this research. The overall aim of this Clinical Research Network (CRN) East Midlands funded research for under-served communities is to make recommendations with the goal of enhancing older age prisoners (55+ years old) rehabilitation and wellbeing and reducing risks. Using self-report measures, this project will seek to understand prisoner wellbeing, health, restrictiveness, cognitive functioning, and recovery levels.
