Research summary
We are going to study subjects aged 18 years and above, who were previously admitted to hospital with severe acute pancreatitis. Namely, we will assess a stool sample to check the level of an enzyme called elastase-1. That will enable us to understand if the pancreas has returned to its normal function or not. We will send the participants a stool sample pot together with an instruction manual. Participants will be assessed at the outpatient clinic for any signs and symptoms of poor food digestion. At this time, they will hand in the stool sample to the research team. The assessment of elastase-1 in the stool is a standard test used in routine practice.
Understanding if the pancreas resumes its function spontaneously, will enable us to know a bit more about this organ; moreover, we will be able to offer future patients the most appropriate long-term management. For instance, we could potentially stop the prescription of pancreatic supplement tablets if appropriate and/or tailor any follow-up needs to each patient.
We would recruit all the subjects aged 18 years and above who were admitted with at least one episode of severe acute pancreatitis.
The study will last one year.REC name
